Ten on Tuesday (Volume 3)

October 27, 2009 at 9:27 am 39 comments

It’s week 3 of Ten on Tuesday! You know the drill… if you’re a blogger you can take this over to your blog. Just make sure to link back over here and put the link to that post in my comments. If you’re not a blogger, answer in the comments. I can’t wait to see your answers!

(Copy that code below to post this image on your blog!) – Okay apparently the code doesn’t work. So just save the jpg..

1. What are you going to be for Halloween?
An adult.

No really, I think I know what my Halloween plans are and I don’t think they’ll involve dressing up. I’m okay with that. Last year Stephen and I sat outside and drank wine and ate grapes while the kiddos came to our house.

2. Have you ever been on television?
I’ve gotten calls saying that people have seen me on tv when they were watching an Astros game. Also, there was this special on Starbucks that CNN (I think) did a few years ago. I was studying at Starbucks in Austin while they were taping. They asked me if I would be in it. They said things like, “Just look like you’re studying.” which of course made it impossible to act like I was studying, even though I actually was studying. Had they just not told me, I would have done fine. Then they told me to bob my head to my iPod music. Awkward. But I happened to see the special many months later as I was channel surfing. I was in it for about 3 seconds.

I charge $20 for autographs.

3. Do you have a toilet paper preference?
Oh look, there is an open can of worms.

I have a LOT of opinions about toilet paper. More than any one woman should have. I started to type out my response but I feared that I would max out the word count so I stopped. Return on Thursday for a full report.

4. When you’re pregnant, will you find out the sex of the baby? (Or if you’ve already had babies, did you find out the sex?) Why or why not?
Absolutely. My mom once said, “Why would you do that?? You’ll have nothing to look forward to!” I disagree, mom. I think I’ll have something to look forward to. Something like, oh I don’t know, A BABY! Anyways, I will want to find out the sex so we can choose a name and talk to him/her by name. Also I’d like to paint the nursery and have gender specific clothes.

5. What are three items that every kitchen must have?
A large flat bottomed skillet, a good knife, a spatula. I understand that there are two different items that people refer to as a spatula. I am referring to these guys.

spatula

6. Do you enjoy Christmas shopping?
Yes, except for the spending money part. But I LOVE to buy gifts for people. Throughout the year I listen to every little comment that people say about needing this or wanting that and I store it away in this little box in my brain. I think it’s fun. I’ve already started my Christmas shopping for this year!

7. What is your go-to recipe? (The thing you cook more than anything else because it’s easy and mindless.) Please share the recipe.
Lemon feta chicken. Yummm. Salt and pepper a couple chicken breasts. Put them in a baking dish and squeeze some lemon over them. Sprinkle (or liberally pour, if you are us) crumbled feta on top of chicken. Squeeze more lemon on top. Bake. I usually bake at like 375 for 25 minutes-ish. Depends on the thickness of your chicken. I also like to throw in a bunch of cherry tomatoes because I LOVE roasted tomatoes.

On our especially cheap days or days when I haven’t been to the grocery store, I make tuna noodle surprise. 1 can of tuna, 1 can of cream of mushroom, a box of mac and cheese. Make the mac and cheese, pour soup and drained tuna in. Mix. Put in a dish and crumbled some potato chips on top. Bake until it browns a bit. It tastes like my childhood.

8. Do you sleep on your back, belly, or side?
Back. Sometimes I’ll start on my side but I can’t ever fall asleep unless I’m on my back. Once I’m in a deep sleep, I can turn on my side and stay asleep but it usually makes my back and neck hurt.

9. How do you feel about Tom Cruise?
I used to like him. I love Top Gun and I like Jerry Maguire. But I never like actors when I know too much about their personal lives. I feel the same way about other uber-famous people. If I know everything about them, I don’t believe them as the character.

Tom Cruise, specifically, has just gotten too weird for me. And there are too many theories about him being gay and having a wife as a cover. And I sort of believe them. Basically if he never made another movie I’d be okay with that.

10. What books are in your “books to read” stack?
I ask most of these questions because I want to know your answers but I must admit that I asked this question because I want you to know my answer! Last week I asked what classic novels I should ask so that I could check number 88 off of my 101 in 1001. You responded. I made a spreadsheet with your answers. The top 3 were Pirde & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and The Picture of Dorian Grey.

On Sunday afternoon, Stephen and I drove around Galveston and parked by the strand. We happened to walk by this bookshop so, of course, we went in. Forty five minutes later, this is what I came out with.

books

I’m also a few chapters into Redeeming Love. And there are about 3 or 4 other chick lit books on my bookshelf that haven’t been read. And I realize that to truly answer this question, I have to tell you what they are. I can’t think of them all! I sitll need to read the Chelsea Handler book. I also have a few Marian Keyes books that I’d like to reread. And I never finished Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper. It’s a heavy book, so I read a chapter at a time. So anyways, I’m all set! Now I just need a week-long vacation on a cruise ship!

Your turn!

    1. a cavewoman… and Luke is going to be my little caveman.

    2. We were on the highlight reel on ESPN during a marlins game b/c we were sitting in Power Alley out in left field and 3 homerun balls came our way. Rob went after all of them. And technically, our engagement was on TV (the Jumbotron) at the Marlins/Astros game at Dolphin stadium… we even have it on DVD!

    3. I actually buy the Target brand.
And Rob and I always fight about the way the toilet paper should be placed on the roll…. I am an “over, he is an “under”. Drives me crazy.

    4. We definitely found out with Luke. It’s hard enough to plan out everything and be ready to welcome a little baby into your life… I wanted to paint cute animals on the wall and pick out bedding and have gender-specific clothes…. you can only put up with so much green or yellow!

    5. I find it difficult to answer any differently… A large flat bottomed skillet, a good knife, a spatula.

    6. Yes. I start Christmas shopping sometime around April… I put away stuff all year, so I don’t have to blow a ton of money in December. I’m pretty tedious with gift-giving; I don’t really like giving generic stuff.

    7. Enchilada pie. Mix 1 can of chili (whatever kind you like, beans, no beans, extra meat) with 1 can cream of chicken and 1 can cream of mushroom, and about 1/4 cup of milk. Spray a round baking dish, and layer tortillas, chili mix, corn, and shredded cheese…. mine usually goes(bottom to top): Tortilla, chili, corn, cheese; repeat twice. Cover with foil and bake at 350 for 30 min… remove foil with about 5 min to go to get cheese nice and melted. Cut into slices and serve with sour cream or guacamole.

    8. Almost totally on my stomach. I do sleep on my side occasionally (had to learn while I was pregnant, b/c you can’t sleep on your stomach for obvious reasons and you’ll pass out if you lay on your back too long.) I learned to sleep on my side with a body pillow!

    9. Very over-rated.

    10. How much time do you have for this answer? 🙂 I have the new Stephen King on it’s way from Amazon the second week of November (very excited!) The rest of my “stack”, all in various stages of completion:
    Temeraire (books 4 and 5)
The Wheel of TIme (book 12)
Winds of Dune by Brain Herbert
Re-reading the Dark Tower series (7 books)
    Crazy Love by Francis Chan
Inside the World of Ace of Cakes
Jesus wants to save christians by Rob Bell
Drops like stars by rob bell
The Lost symbol by dan brown
    Coraline by neil gaiman
Odd and the Frost giants by neil gaiman
Time traveler’s wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Percy Jackson and the Olypians (5 books) by Rick Riordan

    I’m a first-timer! Loved the questions.

  • 5. Lindsay  |  October 27, 2009 at 10:53 am

    1. What are you going to be for Halloween?
Probably nothing. I really don’t like Halloween. You’ve gotta remember, I’m in college so it’s just an excuse for every girl to dress like a slut..and that’s just not me…and I hate seeing other girl’s boobs and butts.

    2. Have you ever been on television?
I don’t think so. I’m not as famous as my sister.0

    3. Do you have a toilet paper preference?
Charmin. Either Ultra Soft or Ultra Strong..one of the 2 extremes.

    4. When you’re pregnant, will you find out the sex of the baby? (Or if you’ve already had babies, did you find out the sex?) Why or why not?
Yes. I want to be able to design and decorate a nursery before I have a kid. Also, I need time to come up with names.

    5. What are three items that every kitchen must have?
    I don’t cook..so a Microwave, skillet, and spatula

    6. Do you enjoy Christmas shopping?
LOVE IT. I love buying things for people.

    7. What is your go-to recipe? (The thing you cook more than anything else because it’s easy and mindless.) Please share the recipe.
Grilled cheese…bread and cheese..you should know how to make it

    8. Do you sleep on your back, belly, or side?
    My side.

    9. How do you feel about Tom Cruise?
I think he’s a really good actor, but a psycho person. I don’t like to see him outside of the movie theater..but he is talented.

    10. What books are in your “books to read” stack?
I just started My Sister’s Keeper. But that’s all I have.

PS, Pride and Prejudice ROCKS. That book is so good!

BTW, I am really looking forward to the TP blog post. I shudder to think that my friendship with you almost died before it started because of toilet paper!

RE: #7 – It depends on the size of your breasts.

  • 8. Dionne C  |  October 27, 2009 at 11:01 am

I am sooo with you on Tom Cruise. Used to like him, but now his weirdness has ruined him, hahahaha.

That recipe sounds sooo good. I am going to be trying that one soon! And that also brings me to your kitchen tool answers – YES a good knife and spatula are IMPERATIVE to culinary coolness.

  • 9. Mandy  |  October 27, 2009 at 11:03 am

Oh my goodness…I am so excited about your reading list! You have to tell me what you think about Pride and Prejudice. I am the leader of the Houston chapter of the Jane Austen Society, so I am always interested in a first timers perspective.

Oh…and Redeeming Love is fabulous! You have to tell me how you like it.

The only book I dont like in that picture is Wuthering Heights. I think you will find that with that book, you will find people that love it or people that absolutely HATE it. I would be in the latter category. I am an avid reader and it took me six months to read it. I only continued to read it because it is a “classic” and I just couldnt imagine myself not reading every “Classic” there ever has been. So, I understand why you may want to read it…I can only wish you good luck. I don’t mean to sound so cynical, but I really LOATHE this book.

OK…I hope you have a happier commenter after this 🙂

  • 10. DebbieQ  |  October 27, 2009 at 11:16 am

Oh I think we will be having Lemon Feta chicken some time this week. I am drooling. Thank goodness you can’t see that!

  • 11. Kathleen  |  October 27, 2009 at 11:32 am

    My answers: http://kapachino.info/?p=1858

I’ve read all those classic novels, and I definitely didn’t like Dorian Gray as much as the others, but it’s still worth a read. Pride and Prejudice is probably my fave out of the three, and is reads faster. Jane Eyre is classic for a reason. You should add A Tale of Two Cities to your classic list if you haven’t already. And Anna Karenina is one of my favorites too, although long.

  • 12. Southern Gal  |  October 27, 2009 at 11:47 am

Now I don’t see it. Am I crazy? Or are you that quick?
(You just answered that for me, so just ignore this.)

    1. What are you going to be for Halloween?
Haven’t dressed up since childhood. We celebrate Reformation Day around here.

    2. Have you ever been on television?
Only on local news reports for various things. Nothing big.

    3. Do you have a toilet paper preference?
    You bet. Charmin Ultra.

    4. When you’re pregnant, will you find out the sex of the baby? (Or if you’ve already had babies, did you find out the sex?) Why or why not?
I did not find out the sex of any of my three children. I wanted to be surprised. The last two were scheduled c-section/induction so since I knew the date I didn’t want to know the sex. It made clothes selections pretty slim if it wasn’t yellow for my showers. My daughter is expecting in June and can’t wait to find out the sex. I can’t either!

    5. What are three items that every kitchen must have?
Cast iron skillet, a good knife (which I don’t have) and a sharpener for said knife, Kitchen Aid mixer

    6. Do you enjoy Christmas shopping?
I love to shop but don’t like to spend. I would buy everyone else everything they wanted if I had the money. Love seeing their faces light up when opening gifts.

    7. What is your go-to recipe? (The thing you cook more than anything else because it’s easy and mindless.) Please share the recipe.
It’s have to be spaghetti. Everyone loves it. We also like pork chops sprinkled with soy sauce and garlic powder baked in a 375 degree oven for about 30 minutes. Those are the easiest.

    8. Do you sleep on your back, belly, or side?
Side mainly. I have become a snorer since my last baby was born. (Weight might have something to do with that.) Anyway to keep me from ‘snorkin’ like a pig’ as Ethan says, I try to stay on my side.

    9. How do you feel about Tom Cruise?
    Neutral

    10. What books are in your “books to read” stack?
Peace Like a River on the recommendation of AnnieBlogs today. The library has it so I’m on my way to get it.

I just finished The Last Song by Nicholas Cage. Cried like a baby. Still plugging through Crazy Love by Francis Chan.

You won’t regret reading Redeeming Love.

    1. Not dressing up.
    2. Yes, I’ve been on TV several times. Once talking about a new reading program. No biggie.
    3.Charmin Ultra
    4. Three kids…..didn’t know sex of any.
    5. Good knives, 10″ non-stick skillet, a dependalbe stove
    6. No, i do not. I prefer gift giving throughout year. Christmas had gotten too commercialized for me.
    7. Egg sandwich with avocado
    8.Side
    9. Got too weird for me!
    10. Alchemist, Forgotten Garden, In This Mountain, Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers, Evensong, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim
These are all in a stack by my bed. Currently reading Last Chance Saloon by Marian Keys

    1. What are you going to be for Halloween?
I have costume from last year that is a polic officer. It was funnier when I had an inmate cuffed to me. I have a couple of offers for places to go,but none sound fun. So, I might tell some gal pals to put on PJs and come over for a scary movie marathon.

    2. Have you ever been on television?
I don’t think so. It is possible that I have an don’t rememeber.

    3. Do you have a toilet paper preference?
Yes. I will defer to Chelsea on this questions because my preferences are uniquely tied to hers.

    4. When you’re pregnant, will you find out the sex of the baby? Why or why not?
Yes! I want to know so that I can buy tons of clothes and have a themed shower, and paint the nursery. Maybe it is an old school thing, but my mom says the same thing as Chelsea’s. of course she didnt even know she was getting a BABY. So, she doesnt get a vote.

    5. What are three items that every kitchen must have?
A silicon spatula, a pampered chef pizza stone, and a shoulder length pot holder (I am still searching for one).

    6. Do you enjoy Christmas shopping?
I LOVE to Christmas shop. I am finished for Christmas 2009.

    7. What is your go-to recipe?
Frozen pizza. I think I could eat it everyday.

    8. Do you sleep on your back, belly, or side?
on my side, but i have almost no routines. So, I do not have a set way that I sleep. I used to sleep on the very edge of my bed, but now I am a single girl with a big bed and so I sleep all over it.

    9. How do you feel about Tom Cruise?
I concur. I used to love him and think he was so cute. Now I think he is short and VERY strange. Plus i dislike he and Katie’s relationship even if Suri is the cutest child on the planet.

    10. What books are in your “books to read” stack?
I am currently reading “Monster in Florence” for my book club, and Scott McKain’s “Calapse of Distinction” for my marketing book (part of my 101 in 1001). In my stack to read there is Blink, Dont share your dounut, wuthering heights, pride and prejudice, my sisters keeper, nicolas sparks new book, same kind of different as me, and more that I can not think of off the top of my head. The “stack” used to be just one pile. Now it is three. The list is never ending and I am definately aquiring (ok… buying) more rapidly than I am reading.

    1. What are you going to be for Halloween? An adult as well. Last year, S guilted me into a Halloween party, which was the world’s lamest Halloween party. I had no costume so I grabbed some coveralls from my car and went as a rig hand.

    2. Have you ever been on television?
Only on accident. Like I was walking by or in the presence of the cameras. I have been on the radio a lot though.

    3. Do you have a toilet paper preference?
I need multi-layers. Not so much a brand preference as much as a softness preference.

    4. When you’re pregnant, will you find out the sex of the baby? (Or if you’ve already had babies, did you find out the sex?) Why or why not?
Without a doubt. I am too neurotic not to know the sex. We had four friends who were all due around the same time and none of them found out the sex. I was so damn stressed about it the entire time. When I brought this up to my mom, she had the EXACT response as your mom.

    5. What are three items that every kitchen must have?
    I have no idea. I don’t cook.

    6. Do you enjoy Christmas shopping?
Of course. Inevitably I stress myself out over it, but I still love it.

    7. What is your go-to recipe? (The thing you cook more than anything else because it’s easy and mindless.) Please share the recipe.
    Totino’s pizza.

OMG. BUt your recipe totally reminded me of peatunorni, which we ate as kids. Basically make a box of Kraft macaroni & cheese and add a can of tuna and a small can of peas. NO need to bake it.

    8. Do you sleep on your back, belly, or side?
Side. On my belly or back I feel like I am going to suffocate. I should probably see a doctor about this.

    9. How do you feel about Tom Cruise?
He is very short. Beyond that, I have no opinion.

    10. What books are in your “books to read” stack?
I have an 8 page book list. I would definitely exceed the word limit.

  • 31. The Husband  |  October 27, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Yes, we will find out the sex of the future baby!

Tom Cruise is a crrraaaaazy kook…but good actor, i still like his movies.

My go-to meal is whatever Chelsea makes. Use to be tuna salad when I was single.

Ive been on tv, but only the back side of me (if you know what I mean…)

3 things for a kitchen: great wife/chef, great machine dishwasher, great supply of ingredients

  • 32. osarah  |  October 28, 2009 at 5:17 am

    1. What are you going to be for Halloween?
I loved your answer. I, too, am going to be an adult. We’ll sit at the bottom of our stairs and hand out candy. (The kids aren’t allowed up in to the stairwell because it apparently causes a rucus. Whatever!)

    2. Have you ever been on television?
I can’t rmeember any time when I might have been on TV, so I’m going to say no. However, this question is how Johnand I realized that we had met prior to dating in 2006. (We met in 2003 once at a rally in Austin – he was on TV for coverage on the rally.)

    3. Do you have a toilet paper preference?
Yes. People think it’s weird, but Cottonelle moist wipes rock.

    4. When you’re pregnant, will you find out the sex of the baby? (Or if you’ve already had babies, did you find out the sex?) Why or why not?
Ye, for the same reasons you stated. Absolutely yes.

    5. What are three items that every kitchen must have?
If we’re excluding appliances, I’d say a hand mixer, a good knife and a good set of pans (hah! I bypassed that third item with a set.)

    6. Do you enjoy Christmas shopping?
Yes, I love buying gifts for others. Like you, I store away all those comments throughout the year, and love getting things for people that I know they need/secretly want but won’t spend money to get. This year, I’m a little stressed since we have so many family members. I think next year we’re going to do a lottery between the siblings on both sides so we can reduce the number of gifts. It’s too expensive!

    7. What is your go-to recipe? (The thing you cook more than anything else because it’s easy and mindless.) Please share the recipe.
    Shells & Cheese
3/4-1 whole package of pasta shells, cooked & drained
1/2-3/4 cup milk (sometimes I substitute some cooking wine for added flavor)
1 can cream of mushroom soup (John doesn’t like mushrooms, so I often use cream of chicken)
1/2 lb of American cheese cut into cubes — I can’t find blocks of American cheese anymore, so I use the singles and just tear them up into pieces

Mix everything together and put in a 9×9 glass dish. Cook at 350 for 25-30 minutes.

I usually serve this with a green veggie. Super easy.

    8. Do you sleep on your back, belly, or side?
I almost always sleep on my stomach. Sometimes I find myself waking up on my side, but not often. I have a feeling I’m going to have a tough time sleeping if we ever have kids.

    9. How do you feel about Tom Cruise?
I don’t feel much about him. I liked his classic dancing scene in Risky Business and I’m a Top Gun fan, but other than that, meh.

    10. What books are in your “books to read” stack?
I love Redeeming Love. When you finish it, let me know what you think of it.

I’m trying to wrap up The Shack. I’m also reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a book called Marriage (I think?). It’s fiction. Also on my nightstand: the newest JK Rowling book and some chick lit book that I think Candace Bushnell wrote. I also have about 80 classics to read on my iPhone. Really, I have a problem with my “to read” pile.

Real quickly before the computer dies…..The book “The Last Song” mentioned by Southern Gal is by Nicholas Sparks, not Cage…it is good – but have kleenex! Also Same Kind of Different as You that is sitting on Lyndsey’s shelf – YOU NEED TO READ THIS LYNDSEY – it is great!. Redeeming Love is one of my all time favorites too! P.S. We are making Feta Chicken for dinner tonight as we watch snow fall over and over and over…. 🙂 P.S.S. OBVIOUSLY the “not knowing the sex of the baby” is a generational thing! Which is fine – I really shouldn’t know what the sex is because I spend TOO MUCH on the baby BEFORE it is even born. i.e. Avery at the Outlet Malls!

    3. I am the same way.
    4. SO true. My mother in law said the same thing as your mom, but once we found out we’re having a boy she LOVES talking to him and saying his name. It’s the best 🙂
    7. I AM TOTALLY MAKING THAT RIGHT THIS SECOND. Ok, maybe I will wait until dinner time.

on the baby issue, I totally agree. And I don’t get the whole “it’s a surprise!”. Um, because how is it different to find out at 20 weeks on an ultrasound than when the baby pops out? Isn’t it equally surprising and exciting?
