Quick Takes On A Thursday

I have the day off tomorrow which means I probably won’t be blogging. (I don’t know why that really matters since I blog at night anyways.) I’m going to give myself a blogging three day weekend so I thought I’d do some quick takes today.

Wordpress has quit emailing me my comments. WHY? It did this once before and I don’t remember why. I think it was a glitch and it fixed itself. Does anyone know anything that could help me at all?? I hate that I have to visit my own blog to see your comments.

My baby is not feeling well. He’s a really happy baby but he is currently seriously super pissed off at the world. I’m not sure what’s going on. He doesn’t have a fever. I’m pretty sure it is tummy related since he kicks his legs and then pulls his knees up to him. He’s been having some serious spit up. I’m trying to be a chill momma and not freak out. Since he has no fever and he isn’t spitting up all his food, I think he’ll be okay. I’ll just keep a close eye on him so I can notice any changes right away.

How many people bought Choco Vine last night?

Every year my cousin gives all of the girls socks for Christmas. I don’t know how she does it but she always finds the most fun pairs! This year we got these red cable knit super long socks! They go up your calf and a drawstring around that top with pom poms on the end. SO CUTE. I look like I’m wearing cable knit boots. I even have my snowmen PJ pants tucked into them.

Look at my Santa.

Here’s another Christmas photo. Stephen’s hat is a bit scraggly. It came with his Santa pants (that you unfortunately can’t see in this picture) and it’s made out of stretchy material which is perfect since he has a very, very large head.

I’m so excited about this weekend that I can hardly contain myself. Three mornings without an alarm clock!! I know, I know… I have a newborn. But little man is good about going back to sleep if I cuddle with him. So I’ll likely have to wake up at 7 or 8 and then we can go back to sleep for another hour or so. I think I could sleep the entire three days if it weren’t for food and potty necessities.

When Chocolate Meets Booze, Magic Happens

Every once in a while a product comes along that seems so off the wall that you swear the maker was high on NyQuil when he came up with it. I’m looking at you Snuggie. And the singing mounted fish. And any item in SkyMall.

The problem is that sometimes these weird products steal our hearts and we convince ourselves that they are a good idea. I own a Snuggie. My dad owns that singing Billy the Bass or whatever the heck it’s called. And sometimes I think I need every single product that SkyMall offers, however ridiculous they are. I remember the first time I saw jeggings in a store. I scoffed. Audibly. I swore that there was no way anyone I knew would ever wear a pair. I figured they’d be like the backpack purse, cute for little girls but completely out of the question for grown ups.

But just this week I heard the following sentence come out of my mouth, “I just really need to get me some jeggings if this is going to look good.” For serious, Chelsea? Who are you? Pretty soon I’m going to be rockin’ a Bumpit and SillyBandz.

Okay so don’t freak out when I tell you about this new product. You will thank me the second you get your hands on it.

Choco Vine. “The taste of dutch chocolate and fine red wine.”

Gross, I know. Someone told us about this stuff and I threw up in my mouth a little bit. Then one day, Stephen came home with a bottle. He bought it at CVS for $11. Now listen, I’m not a wine snob by any means, I think an $11 bottle of wine is a-okay, but when someone tells you about a product and says, “Yeah! You can get it at the local CVS,” something feels wrong. We were hesitant. In fact, we left it in our fridge for several days.

Over the weekend we went to south Texas to be with my family for Christmas. And what would you know, that had a bottle of Choco Vine. My aunt said it was good and she’s definitely not a liar. I tried some. Y’all, this stuff is good. It tastes like Bailey’s only cheaper and you can buy it at the same store you buy your tampons and batteries.

We currently have two bottles of Choco Vine in our wine fridge and it is now my beverage of choice. Pour some Choco Vine over ice and the top with milk. I know it sounds gross, TRUST ME I KNOW, but it is not even a little bit off-putting once you take the first sip. It’s like a grown up glass of chocolate milk. In fact, I may start bringing it in a thermos to work. (Just kidding, mom.)

This weekend is New Years Eve, also known in many circles as: The Night Of Drinking. (Not mine. In my circle it is known as: The Night of Getting Some Sleep and Not Setting An Alarm While the Rest of the Country Gets Wastey Faced and Stays Up All Night.) Go to your drug store or grocery store where I assume they’ll have this fine bottle of wine, and pick up one or two for the party you’re attending. They may look at you like you’re a nut job, but I swear you’ll be getting major props by the end of the night. Just trust me on this.

Ten on Tuesday (60)

First of all, a very happy birthday to my bestest friend, Lyndsey!!!! I love you, Z!!

These questions came from yours truly.

1. What was the number one item on your Christmas wishlist?
I didn’t really have one. I always like to get Chapstick in my stocking because it helps replenish my supply. I usually get enough at Christmas to last until around July. I also wanted some boots.

2. Did you get the number one item on your Christmas wishlist?
Yes. I got several packs of Chapstick, probably enough to last until close to July. And I got some brown boots and a gift card to Cavendar’s so I can go buy new cowboy boots. I’ve had mine since I was 16. My feet are not the same as they were back then and they hurt hurt hurt. Also my cousin cleaned out her closet and gaveme a pair of boots that she doesn’t wear. It was a pretty boot-tastic Christmas!

3. How long has it been since you’ve had a pedicure?
I can’t even remember. I was on maternity leave, so yeah, it’s been a while.

4. How cold is it in your city today?
Today it is supposed to be in the mid-sixties here in Houston, Texas. Yesterday was disgusting, it was in the 40s.

5. How many pillows do you sleep with?
One. And it’s one of those fancy contoured ones. I love it.

6. Can you roll your tongue?
I most certainly can!

7. Do you always buy the same mascara or do you try new ones each tube?
I used to always buy the same kind. I sold Avon and always used a certain one of those. I quit selling Avon at the end of my pregnancy because I couldn’t remember anything and it stressed me out to even think about it. So now I try random ones. What’s your favorite?

8. What’s your favorite cookbook?
The Google

9. What was your first pet?
When I was little we had a dog named Megan. (My parents actually wanted to name me Megan but they decided not to when they realized it would rhyme with my last name. I’m forever grateful.) My first pet that is actually MINE is my dog, Rookie.

10. Do you wear jewelry on a daily basis?
I wear my wedding ring every single day. I usually wear a watch and a necklace. I rarely wear anything more than that if I’m only going to work.

Your turn. Link up!

At Least We Have Cute Pictures

Today is one of those yucky days. My mind and heart are still on vacation but my body has to be back at work. I wish I could snuggle up in bed and take about a nine hour nap, then wake up to eat something and cuddle my baby, and then go right back to sleep for another ten hours or so. Maybe I’d feel rested after that.

My Christmas was great, I hope yours was too. I don’t have much to share today because I am so tired that I can’t even think straight. But I figured you might also be having a yucky Monday, so I thought I’d try to cheer you up.

These are all cell phone pictures so they aren’t great. The lighting in this first one is really bad but I had to share it because Jansen’s smirk is so cute.

And here is my fat Santa. He looks especially fat in this picture because he’s laying funny and, well, he’s wearing a Santa suit.

And here he is in his I Love Santa jammies.

You’re welcome.

Ten on Tuesday questions are posted. I imagine we’ll have light participation this week, but it’s there for those of you looking for an easy blogging option tomorrow.

…And The Soul Felt Its Worth

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks, a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night, O night divine

Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love, and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise His holy name
Christ is the Lord, O praise His name forever
His power and glory ever more proclaim
His power and glory ever more proclaim

Fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night, O night divine

Merry Christmas, y’all. Blessings to you and your family!

A Quiz

A couple weeks ago Stephen went to Camp Beer with his BFF. It was his Christmas gift. Why? Because that’s what good wives do. They give their husbands beer classes and encourage their best friend’s girlfriend to do the same.

Last night Stephen and I decided to finish our gift exchange. We try not to spend much money on each other. Mainly because we don’t have any money. And I guess also because we don’t really need anything and we are so spoiled by our parents that we don’t feel like spending money we don’t have on even more stuff. But Stephen got the Camp Beer tickets and a little somethin-somethin else.

Here is your quiz. There are two pictures below, one is what Stephen opened and one is what I opened. Do you think you can match us to the appropriate picture?

It’s a tough one. Good luck.

Miracle Blanket Winner!

(If you’re looking for Ten on Tuesday, scroll down or CLICK HERE.)

I don’t know how to do the fancy screen shots of the winner. Sorry. But I went to to get the winner. Congrats to comment number 19.

“I have 7 of my closest friends and family that are all expecting between May – July 2011. I would give the blanket to any one of them and maybe buy one for the rest of them. It looks like a great product.”

For the record Stefanie, it was your second comment that made you a winner, so well done on the tweet!

If you didn’t win, go to this site to order your own. If you buy it for a shower gift you will forever be remembered as the person who gifted a good night’s sleep!

Ten on Tuesday (59)

These questions are from Sarah at Simply Sarah.

I’m a bum and I didn’t answer them this week. I KNOW I KNOW. It’s just that I had presents to wrap and Christmas cards to finish and mouths to feed and babies to cuddle and milk to pump and mail to read and it was all just TOO MUCH.

But the show must go on, so here are the questions and Mr Linky is down there at the bottom.

1. Do you do any volunteer work?
2. Do you have night and/or morning ritual?
3. Would you rather exercise or diet? Why?
4. If you would rather exercise, do you prefer going to a gym or working out at home?
5. What do you think is a huge waste of time?
6. What is one way you save time?
7. What is your current obsession?
8. What is a current obsession you can’t wait to pass?
9. Are you currently reading a book? If so, what book? Would you recommend it?
10. Since we had the 90s question last week, what’s your favorite songs from 00′s?

Here you go!

Baby Items You Cannot Live Without (2)

If you missed the first post in this two-post series, click here to read it. I have a few more items to add to the list of must-have baby items. As a refresher, these were the items on the first list (you can go to this post for links):

The Miracle Blanket
The Medela Breast Pump
Music & Motion Soother
The Moby Wrap
Lansinoh Breast Pads
Chicco Cortina Travel System

Just a reminder that you can click on the bolded item and it’ll take you to the product.

A Vibrating Bouncy Seat
I actually can’t find our exact one online but it doesn’t matter, it is similar to the one I linked. There are a bagillion of these to choose from. We chose this because it is simple, compact, it bounces when Jansen kicks, and it vibrates. You don’t want a big seat because you’re (probably) already going to have a swing and a Pack N Play… the last thing you need is more baby crap sitting in your living room. If Jansen is awake when I’m getting ready in the mornings, he’s usually content sitting in his chair while I shower and get dressed. The vibrations soothe him and the hanging turtle, frog, and snail entertain him.

The Owl
Okay I searched and searched for this owl online and I have only been able to find it at this place. As of the time I wrote this post, there were only 2 in stock and I bought them both. If you find them in a store, I suggest you buy all of them. If you didn’t click the link, it’s an owl that hangs from Jansen’s car seat. Lauren gave this to Jansen a couple days after he was born and he loves it. I don’t know what it is about this owl but it is seriously Jansen’s best friend. He talks to it ALL THE TIME. Apparently they tell each other jokes. And I don’t think it’s exclusive to Jansen because anytime my niece is around, she tries to steal it. There are tons of car seat toys out there but I think they really like this one because of the big eyes, plus it’s bigger than most of the other car seat toys so they can actually see it. I’m really not exaggerating. Jansen was hysterical one morning last week and the second I put him in his carrier and he looked at his owl, he started laughing. LAUGHING!

Munchkin Bottle Brush
Do not, I repeat DO NOT try to clean your bottles without a bottle brush. It takes twice as long and is 4 times as frustrating. I don’t know much about formula, but breastmilk has fat in it that sticks to the sides of the bottle and makes it really slick. The best way to get that off is to fill it with a bit of hot soapy water and scrub it a couple times with a bottle brush. I also really like this one because it has a suction cup on the bottom so it can stand upright on the side of the sink. All the water drains off and it stays out of the way.

A Mobile
Any mobile will do, so there is no link. I looked for a mobile before Jansen was born but I never found one that I really liked. I saw a few on Etsy but they were just a bit out of my price range. So I decided not to get one. What would he care anyways?! It would be dark in his room at night and he wouldn’t even be able to see it. But then he got a glimpse of a mobile at a friend of mine’s house. He was mesmerized. So my mom decided to make one for him to either go above his changing table or his crib. We chose to hang it above his crib. He loves it. We usually keep his light on for a little while when we put him to bed and he stares at it.

Here’s a crappy cell phone picture:

On-The-Go Changing Pad
Very very very important. I have had to change Jansen on living room floors, car seats, and in the back of our SUV. Not only does this keep him from having to lay on scratchy, cold, or dirty surfaces, it also protects those surfaces from pee or the inevitable blow-out. I have this diaper bag. (I know, I know. It’s the cutest diaper bag in the world. Good luck trying to find it. My cousin bought it for me and I have yet to be able to find if for sale ANYWHERE.) My diaper bag came with a roll-up changing pad, that’s the one I linked to. I know there are fold up ones out there and some people prefer those. I really could care less how it stores, I just need it! Also, I’ve seen there there are disposible changing pads out there. Those could be handy but I think they seem pretty wasteful. We have a partial pack of them that were given to us as hand-me-downs. I may throw one in our small diaper bag that we have for quick errands.

Changing Pad Covers
This is in reference to the changing pad you’ll have in your nursery. Ours is like some Serta contoured thingy. We don’t have an actual changing table, we bought a dresser that is serving as our changing table for the diaper days. All we have to do is remove the changing pad and it’ll be a dresser fit for a grown up room. So on the changing pad, you have to put a changing pad cover. I had originally just registered for one. WHY? How in the world could you only need one? I suppose if you can wash and dry an entire load of laundry between diaper changes, then you could just use the one. But the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. So buy two! For real. I’m not even going to recommend a brand because I honestly don’t think it matters. Just make sure it’s soft and it’s easy to put on and take off. No zippers, just elastic (imagine a fitted sheet).

I think that’s it y’all. In a week or so, I’ll post my advice on things you DON’T need and “buy this, not that.” For the most part, baby products are trial and error. You don’t know what’s going to work best for you and your baby until you actually have your baby. Although I do believe that this list is pretty much the non-negotiable-items list. If you have anything else to add, feel free to do it in the comments. I know of several people bookmarking these two posts for when they have babies. It’s extremely helpful! When y’all gave me your advice several months ago, I literally printed pages of comments, took notes on them, and took that with me to register.
