Ten on Tuesday (68)

Today’s questions come from Nora at Walking With Nora. They are a nice random bunch!

1. What are your thoughts on Valentine’s Day. Do you love it? Hate it?
I really have no preference. I’m allergic to unnecessary spending and this sort of falls into that category. I like to get a card from Stephen and we always make dinner together.

2. What is your favorite romantic comedy?
You’ve Got Mail.

3. Meg Ryan & John Mellencamp: what’s your first reaction?
I don’t know the gossip here so my first reaction it this: (blank stare).

4. All time favorite poem or quote?
My favorite poem is I Cannot Go To School Today, by Shel Silverstein.

“I cannot go to school today”
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
“I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.

My mouth is wet, my throat is dry.
I’m going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I’ve counted sixteen chicken pox.

And there’s one more – that’s seventeen,
And don’t you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut, my eyes are blue,
It might be the instamatic flu.

I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I’m sure that my left leg is broke.
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button’s caving in.

My back is wrenched, my ankle’s sprained,
My ‘pendix pains each time it rains.
My toes are cold, my toes are numb,

I have a sliver in my thumb.

My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,

I think my hair is falling out.

My elbow’s bent, my spine ain’t straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,

There’s a hole inside my ear.

I have a hangnail, and my heart is …
What? What’s that? What’s that you say?
You say today is ………….. Saturday?

G’bye, I’m going out to play!”

5. What’s the longest amount of time you’ve gone without sleep? (like consecutive hours).
Probably around 30 hours. I pulled one or two all nighters in college but I always went right to sleep after class.

6. What color ink do you prefer to use?
At work I always use blue because I work with a lot of paperwork that needs original signatures. Blue ink helps me determine which are originals and which are copies. At home I don’t really care, as long as it’s a Pilot V5 Extra Fine.

7. Share with us a blog that you recently found and fell in love with (and link us!)
I don’t have time to find new blogs, I hardly have time to visit old blogs. One of my favorite that I haven’t already told you about (PW, Big Mama, LfT, etc.) is Stacie’s blog. She’s funny and I want to be her friend. She lives in New York (not New York City… she has taught us that there is more to the state of New York than NYC) but I want her to move to Texas. Also, she has a cute Etsy shop and I want one of her bracelets.

8. If you could be on a reality TV show which one would you choose?
Worst Cooks In America. Not because I think I am one of the worst cooks in America, but because I think I could have a head start! Plus, I love Anne Burrell and I’d love to learn from her.

9. Mountains or Beach?
If you don’t know my answer, I have not done a very good job of talking about myself every single weekday.

(Beach.)

10. With the Oscars around the corner, what’s your pick for best picture?
I don’t even know! I don’t watch many movies and I’m sure the one that wins will be something I have no desire to see. Do you have any recommendations for someone like me that doesn’t enjoy serious, foreign, scary, sci-fi, or action movies?

Here’s Mr. Linky! (Also, to those of you not linking up, you can still click here to see all the participants and go view their blogs.)

That Shel Silverstein poem was one of my favorites when I was young! What a blast from the past to read it again! Thanks for sharing 🙂

First I have to say I love the name of your contributor this week!

    1. What are your thoughts on Valentine’s Day. Do you love it? Hate it?
After fussing so badly about flowers he bought me in the early years my husband knows to stay away from them. I do love chocolate and a card which is exactly what I got this year. I mean, flowers die, but chocolate stays on the hips forever. Right?

    2. What is your favorite romantic comedy?
    You’ve Got Mail. Yes.

    3. Meg Ryan & John Mellencamp: what’s your first reaction?
I just saw this day before yesterday and screamed! I had to explain what was going on to everyone else in the room. It’s just weird in my opinion. My husband thinks so, too. I love Mellencamp’s music (saw his Scarecrow concert), but he’s a greaser in my book and she’s so…not. Although I do not like her face much anymore since her lips are plastic.

    4. All time favorite poem or quote?
Oh my. I love yours. I think Ethan should memorize that for our annual Recognition Night in May! This is too tough. I’ve always loved The Village Blacksmith. I quote “Thirty days hath September…” all the time and I learned it in 4th grade! I’m now teaching it to Ethan. It’s not a favorite, but I use it a lot.

    5. What’s the longest amount of time you’ve gone without sleep? (like consecutive hours).
Only staying awake at sleepovers as a teenager has kept me up past 24 hours.

    6. What color ink do you prefer to use?
    Black.

    7. Share with us a blog that you recently found and fell in love with (and link us!)
I love Wendy’s blog Almota Roses for her photography and sweet words. It’s calming and refreshing there. I’ve read it for a long time. No new ones recently. Oh, I do love Ruthanne at Eclectic Whatnot, too. She’s a hoot!

    8. If you could be on a reality TV show which one would you choose?
    Amazing Race

    9. Mountains or Beach?
    Beach, baby.

    10. With the Oscars around the corner, what’s your pick for best picture?
I haven’t seen many movies this year. I want to see The King’s Speech.

i TOTALLY forgot about Shel Silverstein, my favorite poem of his was the little girl saying if she didn’t get a pony she would just die…i wrote that one out to my dad every christmas asking him if he really wanted to see if it could happen…

  • 5. Laurie S.  |  February 22, 2011 at 8:24 am

“Allergic to unnecessary spending”. I love this and wish that I would have thought of it myself.

    Shel Silverstein is so great.

    1. What are your thoughts on Valentine’s Day. Do you love it? Hate it?
I don’t really like it..it usually ends up being a flat out bad day.

    2. What is your favorite romantic comedy?
thats too hard of a question

    3. Meg Ryan & John Mellencamp: what’s your first reaction?
    umm…what?

    4. All time favorite poem or quote?
My favorite poem is Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe. It’s so beautiful yet kind of depressing..but then again its EAP. I had to memorize it in 10th grade and have loved the rhythm and words in it ever since.

    5. What’s the longest amount of time you’ve gone without sleep? (like consecutive hours).
i have never gone without even a little bit of sleep at night. but probably right now..up yesterday at 7 and got 2.5 hrs of sleep last night and won’t get to go back to sleep till after 6 tonight

    6. What color ink do you prefer to use?
All kinds! I have to keep notes interesting!

Worst Cooks In America. because i think i need that show

    9. Mountains or Beach?
    BEACH BEACH BEACH

    10. With the Oscars around the corner, what’s your pick for best picture?
As much as i would love Black Swan to win, I think it’ll be King’s Speech…I haven’t seen it but i know the story line and it’s got Collin Firth and Geoffrey Rush so it’s gotta be amazing

  • 7. Mama Fuss  |  February 22, 2011 at 9:14 am

  • 11. Stacie  |  February 22, 2011 at 11:02 am

OMGosh when I read your number 7 my face turned red and my armpits started sweating really bad. I’m going to be really stinky later but oh-so-flattered!! Thanks!

PS. I thought the poem/quote was s’posed to be lovey. Whoopsie.
PPS. I just can’t get Corey to leave NYS. Even on zero degree days like today. Sigh.

  • 12. KEZ  |  February 22, 2011 at 2:04 pm

Oh man! I haven’t thought about Shel Silverstein in so long. So many good books! Loved them as a kid!

  • 13. AshleyD  |  February 22, 2011 at 2:28 pm

  • 14. Taryn  |  February 22, 2011 at 2:45 pm

    1. eh, it’s a hallmark holiday. I enjoy getting a card and just hanging out.

    2. anything with Reese Witherspoon

    3. i know nothing about this.

    4. Invictus by William Ernest Henley (see the rugby movie of the same name!)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

    5. somewhere about 36 hours. stayed up all night studying for a Chem test after an entire day up doing other finals.

    6. i almost always write in black. and it’s always with sharpies or sharpie pens.

    7. Rants from Mommyland. They are hysterical. i can’t even read it during work hours b/c i’ve almost spit coke all over my keybooard on numerous occasions! Rantsfrommommyland.com

    8. Amazing Race. I want to travel!

    9. Beach. Every single time.

    10. I would LOVE if Toy Story 3 could win. My guess is that it will be King’s Speech or Black Swan, but the politics behind the Oscars will most likely give it to Social Network.

  • 15. mom (nana)  |  February 22, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Oh my….do you remember that Shel Silverstein poem from when you were young and we had those books or have you re-visited his poems??? By the way, that wasn’t you – you ALWAYS wanted to go to school!

  • 16. E  |  February 23, 2011 at 12:04 am

In college, I didn’t really do all nighters. Sleep was just a little too important to me.

  • 17. Lexi  |  February 23, 2011 at 11:55 am

I’m going to have that Shel Silverstein poem stuck in my head all day now!

  • 18. Maggie  |  March 1, 2011 at 9:53 am

I am totally new to this whole blog-o-sphere, but how fun! I love the idea of randomizing 10 questions every tuesday! Love love love!

(I had no idea Meg Ryan and Mellencamp were dating either….I feel out of the loop…)
