The Crunchy Mama

(Yes, I understand this is a stereotype. Take it with a grain of salt, please. I mean no harm!)

I’m not crunchy. Really, I’m not. I have nothing against chrunchy tendencies, I’m just too lazy and cheap. I don’t recycle because my neighborhood doesn’t make it easy for us and I’m too lazy to take the stuff to a drop off. I don’t buy organic because it’s too expensive. I believe in medicine and junk food.

But this weekend, I took a step back and took a look at myself. I shocked myself.

We’ve been sick. All of us. Jansen had an upper respiratory infection and pink eye in both eyes. (It was as awful as it sounds.) Stephen had a sinus infection and cold and missed three days of work last week. I started getting sick last Wednesday. I stayed home on Thursday, hoping to fight it off. Friday I felt the same, Saturday I felt much worse, and yesterday was pretty bad too. I have a disgusting cough and it feels like someone fed me razor blades. But, you see, because I’m breastfeeding I can’t take real drugs. So I have some special throat lozenges and I have been gargling salt water. I finally broke down and took some Sudafed because I thought I was going to die at one point.

I don’t really understand people who are anti-drug. I would have given anything to chug some DayQuil and NyQuil! But I didn’t really have that option. Then I took a trip to the grocery store last night and, well, I appear to be quite the crunchster.

I hadn’t showered since Saturday night and didn’t have any makeup on. I was wearing TOMs, carrying reusable grocery bags, buying a cartload of veggies to make homemade baby food, and I was wearing my baby. Who am I?

The good news is that I think we’re all on the mend. Or at least the two boys are, and that’s really all that matters. I can think of better uses of my weekend rather than hacking up my lungs and sleeping, but we don’t really get to make those decisions, do we. Hopefully this week will be better. And hopefully the posts will be more interesting.

(ToT will be posted shortly.)

I’ve been meaning to get back here to remind you that the absolute BEST cure for pink eye is breast milk. Drop a little in each effected eye and, voila. Seriously. Weird, but true. (will also work on anyone else who has contracted said disease, though I can’t imagine you offering to give someone like a co-worker a shot of BM)

Sickness felled our house this weekend, too. I am currently the only one not having too many problems (a weird cough, but otherwise I’m fine) so… here’s hoping you all feel better soon!

You can definitely still take decongestant and stuff while you are breastfeeding. Make sure you’re taking the stuff that has to be taken 3-5x per day, not the 12 or 18-hour stuff… then you can time your medicine with Jansen’s breastfeeding to ensure he gets little to no medicine in your milk. (only about 1% of any drug is passed into the breastmilk anyway.) Dr. Sear’s website has a list of drugs you can safely take….

Hope you guys are all feeling better!!!!!

First, your house of sickness sounds horrible. I’m so sorry. Sickness for anyone after you have kids is just a whole new level of horrible.

Second, the first comment on this post seals it, I have now heard that breast milk can do absolutely everything. Seriously, women should rule the world with all that we can do.

Finally, I thnk that getting a little crunchy is required when you have a sick household. I am very impressed with your baby food making. I keep trying but I just never make the time.

    Feel better!

Sometimes – okay, most of the time – I shock myself with how crunchy I’ve become. And it just keeps escalating!

Glad you could find a little humor in your crummy weekend. Hope you all feel better soon!

I don’t really get people that are anti-drug either. When I have a headache, I take something. If I’m stuffed up or coughing, I take something… I don’t overdo it, because… I like feeling normal but I definitely take something when I am not feeling well.
An old boyfriend of mine said that once he’s old he wants to be able to take that stuff and not be immune to it. I see his point.. but at the same time I don’t. I don’t want to be miserable now! I’ll get stronger stuff when I’m old… 😉

Sorry to hear that the weekend wasn’t so hot for you all but glad that Jansen is better and that you’re on the mend!

(side note, I still need to buy a pair of Tom’s shoes. MUST.)

Glad y’all are on the mend! Poor Hurst family! I would totally take some Nyquil tonight if I were you, and just dump your milk that you pump in the morning (but I know that’ll seem like a waste which sucks)!

And if a crunchy mom is one who wears Toms and shops for veggies and wears her baby, then I definitely want to be a crunchy mom 🙂

Not that old, Chelsea’s mama….I didn’t know either!

I hope you’re feeling better. If not, the world’s expensive soup is making it’s way to Houston!

I hate that you are STILL feeling bad!!!

Lol. Love it. I feel the same way. And I live in Austin. So the crunch level is way up.
