Ten on Tuesday (9)

December 8, 2009 at 9:21 am 22 comments

Before I get started, I need to address the two reasons why today is a big day…
1. It’s the season finale of The Biggest Loser. For real this time!
2. Julie & Julia comes out on DVD today!! Hopefully my husband will be getting this for me. If you’d like to read my post from after I watched J&J in the theater, click here.

Today’s list comes from Jill (<– that’s a link). I love Jill. She doesn’t post too often right now because she’s in school and doesn’t really have time. Don’t hate her for that. Just add her to your Google Reader and you’ll get her updates when she feels like posting. Plus, if you’re real nice she’ll read your blog and leave you fun comments. Everyone repeat after me: Thank you Jill!

1. Cost aside, if you could go (back) to college for anything besides what you currently “do,” what would you study?
Journalism or English. Or creative writing. Or something computer related so I don’t have to bug Lauren or Tiffany every time I have a blog-related question.

Actually two nights ago, Stephen and I were laying in bed and he randomly asked, “Would you ever like to go to culinary school?” After talking about it, my answer was no. I love to cook, but I don’t necessary want to be a chef. Plus I enjoy the trial and error of learning on my own. However, assuming it was fully paid for and we’d still be receiving my income even though I wouldn’t be working, I don’t see why not.

2. What do you do for a living? Do you love it/hate it?
I do a random laundry list of things for a contruction company. I don’t love it or hate it. It’s not my life’s calling but it’s not nearly as bad as my 6 month career in banking!

3. What is your favorite Christmas ornament? If you don’t celebrate Christmas, what is your favorite holiday tradition?
I have a lot of faves. Here are a few.

This is one that I’ve had forever. It reminds me of childhood and Christmas- two of themost joyful things in life.

This is a new favorite. It’s a shopping angel. They totally exist. She’s carrying shoes and hangers and a credit card.

And this set just makes me happy. So much character. So loved. I had to turn the lights off for this one because it was too blurry. So now it’s dark. Deal.

4. Name something you could literally do without for the rest of your life.
There are so many that I don’t know where to start. I’ll stay away from obvious things like mosquitos, pimples, and all VH1 reality television shows. I could go without seafood, running, and cats. I could also go without working (assuming there is some other form of income), weather below 70 degrees, and doing housework (assuming someone else is there to do it for me).

5. If you were going to have any kind of “cosmetic procedure,” what would it be?
I’m a believer that God made us how He wanted us to look. “He oh-so-creatively knit me together in my momma’s womb.” (Loose translation of Psalm 139:13) I don’t want to mess with something that God intended. However, I wouldn’t mind a round or two of microdermabrasion. I have redness and scars from years of acne.

6. Do you have any “collections”? (comic books, shoes, etc.)
Cookbooks, cutting boards, spatulas, scarves, cards that people have written me, stationary, almost anything that has any sort of meaning to it. Basically, I’m a hoarder. We’ve talked about this HERE and HERE.

7. At what age did you get your first cell phone?
16. But back in “those days” we didn’t leave our cell phone on. I had one that I kept in my purse and I only turned it on to call someone quickly or if there was an emergency.

8. What is currently in your purse (or pocket or backpack if you’re a guy)?
My cell phone, wallet, checkbook, a small Bible, clothbound Wuthering Heights (yes, I’m STILL reading it. I haven’t had much time to read lately), 4 pens, postage stamps, two extra tubes of Chapstick, my 2009 planner, my 2010 planner, a coupon to Bed Bath & Beyond, my grocery list from Sunday, lotion, the Mexican version of Imitrex, Aleve, and a coin purse.

9. Are you a neat-freak or a slob ? *this applies to house, office, car, etc.
I love clean homes but I don’t have one. If I have spare time I would rather cook, blog, or sleep. I hate cleaning. But I really need to change my ways because my messy house makes me grumpy.

10. What kind of parent do you think you will be? If you’re already a parent, what is your style?
Oh goodness, I have no idea. I don’t know if there is any way of knowing. I believe in spanking, I believe in loving your child so much that there is never a doubt in their mind, I believe in discipline. I don’t think a child should be overly spoiled. I believe that my child should be raised in the ways of the Lord and learn all the cheesy church songs. I believe children should have responsibilities and receive praise. But as far as my parenting, we’ll see how it goes. I’m sure y’all with be with me ever step of the way!

No Linky today. He annoys me. Just leave your link in the comments. If it doesn’t show up right away, that probably means that WordPress thinks it’s spam. I’ll periodically check the spam folder to approve.

    1. my bachelor’s degree is in marine biology (which I’m not currently using, see #2.) I would probably go back to college and do marine bio over again, but then get a job in the field instead of going to grad school (where I got a MFA in medical illustration, see #2 again.)

    2. I am a medical illustrator for a litigation support company. Basically that means I draw nasty injuries and surgeries for attorneys to use in trial. Honestly, the company and some of the people I work for can drive me nuts, but I LOVE my actual job.

    3. I have a set of glass fish ornaments that I absolutely love. And the “baby’s first christmas” ornament I got when Luke was born.

    4. Onions. I am highly allergic. It really sucks, b/c I can never go to a restaurant and just order right off the menu, especially with mexican food (my favorite!) I could also do without cold weather, cats, exercise, and health food.

    5. Tummy tuck. I had to have a c-section with Luke. Those muscles (and skin) just don’t wanna snap back on their own.

    6. Books and shoes. I have approx 70 pairs of shoes, mostly heels (and yes, i wear all of them.) And I have 3 HUGE bookshelves full of books.

    7. 21, I think? My junior year of college, so I guess that was 1998-99…cell phones were just becoming the new big thing then.

    8. Wallet, small makeup case, lipstick, cell phone, mp3 player, business cards, a couple of pens, mint chapstick, and a folded up piece of paper with my christmas shopping list on it.

    9. For the most part, neat freak. Things get a little messy if its been a long week, but they don’t stay that way for too long. My husband is a slob, so I have to counteract his mess!

    10. I would say I’m pretty laid back. He’s only 17 months old, so I’m still really careful when he’s trying to climb up on stuff (or jumping off the couches!) but I don’t care if he gets messy or eats weird stuff or is just being a typical boy. They’re only little once… you have to let them run around and get in trouble and not hover all the time.

    Mine are here: http://lisasyarns.blogspot.com/2009/12/ten-on-tuesday_08.html

There are so many things I could do without as well – like everything on your list. And I never thought of the microdermabrasion – good answer. I also have scarring/redness from acne. 😦 Boo on that. It has faded a bit, but I still notice it when I am sans make-up.

    Here’s mine!
    http://talklesssaymore.blogspot.com/2009/12/12809.html

    1. My mom asked me the same thing a few months ago (about culinary school), I love cooking but ultimately decided no because there’s some stuff I just never want to have to do and taste. At culinary school you have to learn, taste and do it all.

    3. I love that lion- so cute!

    5. Don’t they have microdermabrasion kits for at home, do it yourself, use now? Not sure how well they’d work though…

    8. I wonder what percentage of the woman who describe their purses have some form of migraine medicine in them?😉

  • 7. Lyndsey  |  December 8, 2009 at 11:11 am

    1. Cost aside, if you could go (back) to college for anything besides what you currently “do,” what would you study?
Finance at McCombs School of Business
    2. What do you do for a living? Do you love it/hate it?
I do sales consulting for a financial marketing firm. I basically tell people what to sell and how to sell it. I really like what I am doing, and I love what I am going to be doing.
    3. What is your favorite Christmas ornament? If you don’t celebrate Christmas, what is your favorite holiday tradition?
My mom used to get me a new ornament every year to put on the tree. I always thought it was fun. Now I get the UT ornament every year. I love those too.
    4. Name something you could literally do without for the rest of your life.
I could go out without dating someone new for the rest of my life. (assuming I have already met and dating my husband… which I haven’t)
    5. If you were going to have any kind of “cosmetic procedure,” what would it be?
Liposuction. Lots of it. And the “mommy Makeover” after several children.
    6. Do you have any “collections”? (comic books, shoes, etc.)
I collect highball glasses and shoes.
    7. At what age did you get your first cell phone?
My dad gave me his when I went to college at 18 and I got my own when I was 19.
    8. What is currently in your purse (or pocket or backpack if you’re a guy)?
My wallet, lotion, my planner, 4 lip glosses, keys to my car, keys to my apt, mascara, A pen, medication, and inhaler, business card holder, and pooperie
    9. Are you a neat-freak or a slob ? *this applies to house, office, car, etc.
I am a neat freak. I LOVE organization and cleanliness. I actually like to clean (I hate to unload the dishwasher and take out the trash). My apartment is spotless right now and it makes me calmer and happier. Messes make my brain scrambled. I need order to function.
    10. What kind of parent do you think you will be? If you’re already a parent, what is your style?
I am terrified that I will be a spastic parent and make my kids spastic too. Hopefully I will be a laid back parent that doesn’t sweat the small stuff but is strict about what is important.

I can’t believe Biggest Loser is almost done! I haven’t watched the show in a few seasons. I know, terrible, but I like your summaries because I get to feel like I still watch it.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who isn’t so eager to go under the knife- I’m always a little taken aback by how many people would have plastic surgery if they could. Come on kids!! We are how we are! =)

Mister and I are starting our own ornament exchange this year so we have more meaningful ones & can grow our collection. I’m excited to go pick them out!

Hi Jill! School is not an excuse to slow down on blog posts. School will get you nowhere, but blogging is the key to success.

    1. Cost aside, if you could go (back) to college for anything besides what you currently “do,” what would you study?
Tough call. Maybe English. But probably fashion school. I know…who the hell do I think I am, Lauren Conrad?

    2. What do you do for a living? Do you love it/hate it?
The short answer: oil & gas. The long answer: you don’t have enough time for me to explain it. It is just a job. I would never say that I love it. What I do hate is my 19 mile one-way commute. It sort of makes me want to drive into a brick wall.

    3. What is your favorite Christmas ornament? If you don’t celebrate Christmas, what is your favorite holiday tradition?
I don’t really have a favorite ornament. My parents always decorated the tree so I couldn’t tell you what half of them are. But I love that we have tamales and chili on Christmas Eve.

    4. Name something you could literally do without for the rest of your life.
    Folding socks.

    5. If you were going to have any kind of “cosmetic procedure,” what would it be?
Oh man. Botox. I would totally get boobs after kids.

    6. Do you have any “collections”? (comic books, shoes, etc.)
Etiquette books. Which is obviously why I am so well-mannered. Shoes. Coats. Books.

    7. At what age did you get your first cell phone?
    14. But Chelsea is right…you didn’t leave it on. I only had it so I could call my parents and tell them I made it to wherever or that I needed a ride home.

    8. What is currently in your purse (or pocket or backpack if you’re a guy)?
Wallet, Kate Spade planner, birth control pills (TMI???), pen, digital camera, book, umbrella, jewelry roll, catalogs, 2 greeting cards, world’s largest sunglasses case (with sunglasses in them), assorted hair rubber bands, 4 chapsticks, 2 lip glosses, keys, cell phone, and some mail

    9. Are you a neat-freak or a slob ? *this applies to house, office, car, etc.
    Neat freak. I can’t handle a mess.

    10. What kind of parent do you think you will be? If you’re already a parent, what is your style?
Who the heck knows. I just hope I don’t screw them up too terribly.

1.Journalism… I really want to get my master’s in Journalism Education but its too expensive right now and I can’t see adding something else to trying to be a mom and teacher. Either that, or I would just like to go back to college with the knowledge of what I know now. I would have paid better attention.

    2. Teach 1/2 time…. I love it some days, I hate parts of it some days. If I could teach and not grade, or JUST teach yearbook… I would be a happier person. Almost as happy as I would be if I didn’t have to work at all. HA.

    3. My favorite Christmas ornament are the light up/motion ones we used to have on our tree growing up. They were so much fun! I have too many favorite traditions to start listing them… but my LEAST favorite holiday tradition right now is not getting to spend every Christmas with my family. Don’t get me started on why its not fair.

    4. Rap music and screaming rock.

    5. I agree, God made us the way we are. But… there are days I dream of what lipo and some face work would be like.

    6. Music boxes, books, cards/notes from friends.

    7. 18/19

    8. Face powder, chapstick, nail scissors, contact drops, baby wipes, extra underwear (for Caden NOT me), bib, neatsolutions table topper, fork/spoon, collapsible potty seat (in a sanitary holder bag), lotion, antibacterial gel, comb, checkbook, wallet, planner, pens, gum, trash, tylenol… You asked, so don’t judge.🙂

    9. I LOVE a clean house… but I am cluttered, my car is a disaster, and my desk is organized.

    10. I have no idea what my parenting “style” is. I love my kid. He knows God, rules, and structure.

  • 16. TiphanyB  |  December 8, 2009 at 4:49 pm

    1. Cost aside, if you could go (back) to college for anything besides what you currently “do,” what would you study?
    Marine Biology

    2. What do you do for a living? Do you love it/hate it?
I’m the building proctor for TEES, a state agency affiliated with Texas A&M University. I do an odd assortment of things to make sure that things in in our building run smoothly- everything from security and safety to making sure there is enough coffee for 115+ employees. Most days I love it.

    3. What is your favorite Christmas ornament? If you don’t celebrate Christmas, what is your favorite holiday tradition?
My favorite Christmas ornament is of a little girl sitting on a cloud next to a rainbow. It hooks up to the Christmas lights, and glows. I’ve had it since I was really little.

    4. Name something you could literally do without for the rest of your life.
Such a vague question… illness, bugs, seafood.

    5. If you were going to have any kind of “cosmetic procedure,” what would it be?
Does laser hair removal count? I would do that.

    6. Do you have any “collections”? (comic books, shoes, etc.)
Precious Moments, Turtles (basically people will give me anything with a turtle on it just because I’ve always owned real ones), Hallmark Ornaments, US Mint Coins, Martin has Danish stamps, and we are starting a collection of US Stamp books for Paige.

    7. At what age did you get your first cell phone?
17- a present from my mom when I graduated high school/ went to college so that I could keep in touch with my family and boyfriend at the time.

    8. What is currently in your purse (or pocket or backpack if you’re a guy)?
2 free movie tickets, a free gift certificate to Muldoon’s Coffee, nail file, pens, credit card case, brush, make-up, mint lip gloss, chapstick, wallet, address book, keys, coin purse, batteries, Huggies rewards, and gum.

    9. Are you a neat-freak or a slob ? *this applies to house, office, car, etc.
I’m neat… but not a freak. Definitely not a slob. I used to be super organized but that was before I got divorced and had to fit a whole house worth of stuff into my old apartment- then I got married and had a baby and I don’t think I’ll ever recover. 🙂

    10. What kind of parent do you think you will be? If you’re already a parent, what is your style?
I’m a pretty laid back parent… but then again, Paige is a really super easy baby. She has her share of bumps and bruises, but we feel it builds character! 🙂

Something else I can live without? Overly personal/sentimental facebook status updates. They drive me nuts.

  • 20. This Heavenly Life  |  December 8, 2009 at 10:11 pm

    1. I’d go back to school for some sort of literature type thing…dude…I sound really scholarly. I think I’d like to be a literature teacher. Either that or a pastry chef.

    2. For a living…I live🙂 I’ll stay home with my kids for as long as finances allow.

    4. I could do without dry skin, static, paper cuts, seafood, flies, insecurity….lots of things, come to think of it.

    5. I’d have a magically as-yet-undiscovered treatment to eliminate my redness when embarrassed.

    9. I WISH I were a neat freak. I think I’m like you…I want to have a clean house, but I want someone else to do the work. Not that I mind the work…there are some aspects of housecleaning that I actually enjoy. But I just can’t fit enough time in my day to clean AND blog. A conundrum.

    10. I am a very uptight parent. Or I have been in the past. Schedules had to be followed, certain food had to be eaten, and I read tons of books on proper discipline techniques. Now, I’ve settled down a bit. Not by the world’s standards, mind you…just by my own. I still am strict about bedtimes and an overall healthy eating approach, just not devastated when things happen outside of my plan. Which happens alot. Above all, I hope for my children to grow up knowing and giving love. I want them to be kind and considerate. And happy. Yes, I know saying I want them to be happy goes against the parenting mantra of ‘don’t try to be your kid’s friend, just lay down the law and make them obey, happy or not.’ but I can’t help it. I’m a sap and I want to do everything I can to show them how loved they are. Fingers crossed, they’ll turn out OK.

  • 21. jill  |  December 8, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Aw you love me! You really love me!🙂 Thank you for using my questions! I would like to know how you got your hands on the Mexican version of Imitrex? I mean, I know you live in Texas and all…hehe

  • 22. Ashley  |  December 9, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Oh the days of the “emergency” cell phone! I sported a beeper a time or two also🙂
